Online talk with Rogier Creemers, Associate Professor at Leiden University and co-founder of the Stanford-New America DigiChina Project
China’s new Data Security Law took effect a short few weeks ago, and the Personal Information Protection Law will likely follow before the end of the year. These laws will form the centerpiece of a comprehensive new regime to manage risks associated with data, which will have a significant impact on China’s domestic data flows, but may also have a considerable international impact. Some aspects of this regime are innovative to the point they are internationally unique, and may well be imitated elsewhere. To understand these impacts, data security expert Rogier Creemers discussed the evolving perception of Chinese authorities of data-related risks and concerns, the objectives they are trying to achieve and the means by which they do so.
Rogier Creemers is an associate professor in the law and policy of China at Leiden University. His research focuses on the Chinese use of technology in modernizing governance, as well as the growing role of China in global digital affairs.
